INSEAD Summer Startup Tour – 2021

… we decided to narrow our scope to those technologies that have the potential to solve one of humanity’s greatest problems: How to feed 10 billion people by 2050 without continuing destroying our environment.
Motivated by our class discussions on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, on the emerging global food security concern driven by the COVID pandemic, on the increasing investor’s focus on food start-ups, and on our passion for food, we decided to embark on a research mission on the FoodTech industry as main focus of the INSEAD Summer Start-Up tour (SSUP). Our goal: understand the most current trends in FoodTech in the world and how the start-up ecosystem in various geographies influenced the development and success of these companies. As FoodTech is a broad industry, we decided to narrow our scope to those technologies that we think have the potential to solve one of humanity’s greatest problems: How to feed 10 billion people by 2050 without continuing destroying our environment. Our hypothesis: Alternative Proteins (cell-based and plant-based) and Vertical Farming.
